religious scholars:

people who study the Scriptures and religion. At the time of Isa the Messiah, the religious scholars studied the Taurat and other Scriptures and made copies of them. They also taught the Taurat, along with religious laws and traditions. They are sometimes called "experts in religious law" and "scribes."
