He Sends Others Out for Ministry
1 After this, Maulana Isa appointed seventy-two others to send them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he intended to go. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. So ask the owner of the harvest to send workers into his harvest. 3 Now go. I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. 4 Don't carry with you a money pouch, or a food bag, or sandals.* And don't greet anyone on the way.

1 بَعْدَ هَذَا، عَيَّنَ مَوْلانَا عِيسَى 72 آخَرِينَ، وَأَرْسَلَهُمْ قُدَّامَهُ اثْنَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ، إِلَى كُلِّ بَلَدٍ وَمَكَانٍ حَيْثُ كَانَ يَنْوِي أَنْ يَذْهَبَ. 2 وَقَالَ لَهُمْ: ”الْحَصَادُ كَثِيرٌ لَكِنَّ الْعُمَّالَ قَلِيلُونَ، فَاسْأَلُوا صَاحِبَ الْحَصَادِ أَنْ يُرْسِلَ عُمَّالًا إِلَى حَصَادِهِ. 3 اِذْهَبُوا، فَأَنَا أُرْسِلُكُمْ مِثْلَ حُمْلَانٍ وَسْطَ ذِئَابٍ. 4 لَا تَأْخُذُوا مَعَكُمْ مَحْفَظَةً، وَلَا كِيسَ أَكْلٍ،* وَلَا حِذَاءً، وَلَا تُسَلِّمُوا عَلَى أَحَدٍ فِي الطَّرِيقِ.
5 “In whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be upon this house.’ 6 If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, because the worker deserves his pay. Don't move from house to house.
5 ”وَأَيُّ دَارٍ تَدْخُلُونَهَا، قُولُوا أَوَّلًا: ’السَّلَامُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الدَّارِ‘، 6 فَإِنْ كَانَ هُنَاكَ رَجُلُ السَّلَامِ، يَحِلُّ سَلَامُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ، وَإِلَّا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْكُمْ. 7 وَأَقِيمُوا فِي نَفْسِ الدَّارِ تَأْكُلُونَ وَتَشْرَبُونَ مَا يُقَدِّمُونَهُ، لِأَنَّ الْعَامِلَ يَسْتَحِقُّ أُجْرَتَهُ. فَلَا تَنْتَقِلُوا مِنْ دَارٍ إِلَى دَارٍ.
8 “Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are in [the town] and say, ‘The Kingdom of Allah has come to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and its people do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town which has clung to our feet we shake off at you! But know that the Kingdom of Allah came near to you!’ 12 I tell you, the situation of Sodom* on the Day of Judgment will be easier [to bear] than the situation of that town.
8 ”وَمَتَى دَخَلْتُمْ بَلْدَةً، وَرَحَّبَ أَهْلُهَا بِكُمْ، فَكُلُوا مَا يُقَدَّمُ لَكُمْ، 9 وَاشْفُوا الْمَرْضَى الَّذِينَ فِيهَا وَقُولُوا: ’مَمْلَكَةُ اللهِ أَصْبَحَتْ قَرِيبَةً مِنْكُمْ.‘ 10 لَكِنْ مَتَى دَخَلْتُمْ بَلْدَةً، وَلَمْ يُرَحِّبْ أَهْلُهَا بِكُمْ، فَاخْرُجُوا إِلَى شَوَارِعِهَا وَقُولُوا: 11 ’حَتَّى غُبَارُ بَلْدَتِكُمُ الَّذِي لَصِقَ بِأَرْجُلِنَا، نَحْنُ نَنْفُضُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ. إِنَّمَا اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ مَمْلَكَةَ اللهِ أَصْبَحَتْ قَرِيبَةً مِنْكُمْ.‘ 12 أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِنَّ حَالَةَ سَدُومَ* فِي يَوْمِ الدِّينِ سَتَكُونُ أَسْهَلَ مِنْ حَالَةِ تِلْكَ الْبَلْدَةِ.
13 “How terrible it will be for you, Korazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida!* For if the miracles that took place in you had taken place in Sur and Saida, their people would have repented long ago and demonstrated this by sitting clothed in sackcloth, with ashes on their heads. 14 But the situation of Sur and Saida on the Day of Judgment will be easier [to bear] than your situation. 15 And you, Kafr Nahum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, instead you will descend into the pit.*
13 ”يَا وَيْلَكِ يَا كُورَزِينُ! يَا تَعَاسَتَكِ يَا بَيْتَ صَيْدَا!* فَلَوْ جَرَى فِي صُورَ وَصَيْدَا مَا جَرَى عِنْدَكُمَا مِنْ مُعْجِزَاتٍ، لَتَابَ أَهْلُهُمَا مِنْ زَمَنٍ بَعِيدٍ، وَعَبَّرُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ بِأَنْ جَلَسُوا لَابِسِينَ الْخَيْشَ، وَعَلَى رُؤُوسِهِمِ الرَّمَادُ. 14 لَكِنَّ حَالَةَ صُورَ وَصَيْدَا فِي يَوْمِ الدِّينِ سَتَكُونُ أَسْهَلَ مِنْ حَالَتِكُمَا. 15 وَأَنْتِ يَا كَفْرَنَاحُومَ، هَلْ تَرْتَفِعِينَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ؟ لَا، بَلْ إِلَى الْهَاوِيَةِ تَنْزِلِينَ.*
16 “Anyone who listens to you is listening to me, and anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting the One who sent me.”
16 ”مَنْ يَسْمَعُ لَكُمْ يَسْمَعُ لِي، وَمَنْ يَرْفُضُكُمْ يَرْفُضُنِي، وَمَنْ يَرْفُضُنِي يَرْفُضُ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَنِي.“
17 The seventy-two came back joyful and said, “Master, even the demons surrender to us by the power of your name!” 18 Then he said to them, “I saw Satan falling from heaven like lightning. 19 I have given you authority to trample on serpents, scorpions, and every power of the enemy, and nothing will harm you. 20 But do not rejoice [merely] because the spirits surrender to you; rather, rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
17 وَرَجَعَ الـ72 فَرْحَانِينَ وَقَالُوا: ”يَا سَيِّدُ، حَتَّى الشَّيَاطِينُ تَخْضَعُ لَنَا بِقُوَّةِ اسْمِكَ!“ 18 فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: ”رَأَيْتُ الشَّيْطَانَ يَسْقُطُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِثْلَ الْبَرْقِ. 19 أَنَا أَعْطَيْتُكُمُ السُّلْطَةَ لِكَيْ تَدُوسُوا الْحَيَّاتِ وَالْعَقَارِبَ وَكُلَّ قُوَّةٍ لِلْعَدُوِّ، وَلَا يَضُرَّكُمْ شَيْءٌ. 20 لَكِنْ لَا تَفْرَحُوا بِأَنَّ الْأَرْوَاحَ تَخْضَعُ لَكُمْ، بَلِ افْرَحُوا بِأَنَّ أَسْمَاءَكُمْ كُتِبَتْ فِي السَّمَاءِ.“
21 At that time Isa was filled with joy in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise you, Father, Sustainer of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these matters from wise men and scholars, and have revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, for this is your good will.
21 فِي ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ امْتَلَأَ عِيسَى بِالْفَرَحِ بِالرُّوحِ الْقُدُّوسِ وَقَالَ: ”أَحْمَدُكَ يَا أَبِي، يَا رَبَّ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، لِأَنَّكَ أَخْفَيْتَ هَذِهِ الْأُمُورَ عَنِ الْحُكَمَاءِ وَالْعُلَمَاءِ، وَكَشَفْتَهَا لِلْبُسَطَاءِ. نَعَمْ يَا أَبِي، لِأَنَّ هَذِهِ مَشِيئَتُكَ الصَّالِحَةُ.
22 “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”*
22 ”أَبِي أَوْكَلَ لِي كُلَّ شَيْءٍ، لَا أَحَدَ يَعْرِفُ مَنْ هُوَ الْاِبْنُ إِلَّا الْأَبُ، وَلَا أَحَدَ يَعْرِفُ مَنْ هُوَ الْأَبُ إِلَّا الْاِبْنُ وَالَّذِينَ يَشَاءُ الْاِبْنُ أَنْ يُعْلِنَهُ لَهُمْ.“*
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said to them privately, “How fortunate are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you, many of the prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but didn't see it, and to hear what you hear but didn't hear it.”
23 وَالْتَفَتَ إِلَى تَلَامِيذِهِ وَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَلَى انْفِرَادٍ: ”هَنِيئًا لِلْعُيُونِ الَّتِي تَرَى مَا تَرَوْنَ. 24 لِأَنِّي أَقُولُ لَكُمْ، إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَالْمُلُوكِ أَرَادُوا أَنْ يَرَوْا مَا تَرَوْنَ وَلَمْ يَرَوْا، وَأَنْ يَسْمَعُوا مَا تَسْمَعُونَ وَلَمْ يَسْمَعُوا.“
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 One time, an expert in religious law stood up to test Isa, saying, “Teacher, what must I do so that I can have a share in eternal life?”* 26 Isa said to him, “What does the Taurat say? What do you read in it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your Allah with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your ability, and all your thinking’;* and ‘Love the next person just as you love yourself.’”* 28 [Isa] said to him, “Your answer is correct. Do this, and you will live!”
مَثل السامري الصالح
25 وَذَاتَ مَرَّةٍ، قَامَ وَاحِدٌ مِنْ عُلَمَاءِ الشَّرِيعَةِ لِيَمْتَحِنَ عِيسَى وَقَالَ: ”يَا مُعَلِّمُ، مَاذَا أَعْمَلُ لِكَيْ يَكُونَ لِي نَصِيبٌ فِي حَيَاةِ الْخُلُودِ؟“* 26 فَقَالَ لَهُ عِيسَى: ”مَاذَا تَقُولُ التَّوْرَاةُ؟ مَاذَا تَقْرَأُ فِيهَا؟“ 27 أَجَابَ: ”أَحِبَّ الْمَوْلَى إِلَهَكَ بِكُلِّ قَلْبِكَ وَكُلِّ نَفْسِكَ، وَكُلِّ قُدْرَتِكَ، وَكُلِّ فِكْرِكَ،* وَأَحِبَّ الْآخَرَ كَمَا تُحِبُّ نَفْسَكَ.“* 28 فَقَالَ لَهُ: ”جَوَابُكَ صَحِيحٌ، اِعْمَلْ هَذَا فَتَحْيَا.“
29 “But the man wanted to justify himself, so he said to Isa, “Who do you mean by ‘the next person’?” 30 Isa replied to him: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,* and he fell into the hands of robbers. They took his clothes away from him, beat him up, left him half dead, and went away. 31 Now it happened that a cleric was coming down the same road. When he saw him, he walked by on the other side of the road and went on. 32 In the same way, a member of the staff at the Temple of Allah came upon the scene, and when he saw him, he walked by on the other side of the road and went on.*
29 ”لَكِنَّ الرَّجُلَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُبَرِّرَ نَفْسَهُ، فَقَالَ لِعِيسَى: ”مَنْ تَقْصِدُ بِالْآخَرَ؟“ 30 أَجَابَهُ عِيسَى: ”كَانَ رَجُلٌ نَازِلًا مِنَ الْقُدْسِ إِلَى أَرِيحَا،* فَوَقَعَ فِي أَيْدِي لُصُوصٍ، فَنَزَعُوا عَنْهُ ثِيَابَهُ وَضَرَبُوهُ، وَتَرَكُوهُ بَيْنَ حَيٍّ وَمَيِّتٍ وَمَضَوْا. 31 وَتَصَادَفَ أَنَّ أَحَدَ رِجَالِ الدِّينِ كَانَ نَازِلًا فِي نَفْسِ الطَّرِيقِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ، سَارَ فِي النَّاحِيَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِنَ الطَّرِيقِ وَمَضَى. 32 وَبِنَفْسِ الطَّرِيقَةِ، وَصَلَ عِنْدَ الْمَكَانِ أَحَدُ خُدَّامِ بَيْتِ اللهِ،* فَلَمَّا رَآهُ، سَارَ فِي النَّاحِيَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِنَ الطَّرِيقِ وَمَضَى.
33 “But a Samaritan* was traveling, and he came upon the man. When he saw him, he had pity on him. 34 He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds, and bandaged them up. Then he put the man on his pack animal, took him to an inn,* and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, ‘Please take care of him. And if you spend more than this, I'll pay it [back] to you when I return.’
33 ”لَكِنَّ سَامِرِيًّا* كَانَ مُسَافِرًا، وَصَلَ عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَشْفَقَ عَلَيْهِ. 34 وَاقْتَرَبَ مِنْهُ، وَصَبَّ زَيْتًا وَخَمْرًا عَلَى جُرُوحِهِ وَرَبَطَهَا، ثُمَّ أَرْكَبَ الرَّجُلَ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ، وَأَخَذَهُ إِلَى فُنْدُقٍ* وَاعْتَنَى بِهِ. 35 وَفِي الْغَدِ، أَخْرَجَ عُمْلَتَيْنِ مِنَ الْفِضَّةِ، وَأَعْطَاهُمَا لِصَاحِبِ الْفُنْدُقِ وَقَالَ لَهُ: ’مِنْ فَضْلِكَ أَنْ تَعْتَنِيَ بِهِ، وَإِنْ صَرَفَتَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ هَذَا، أَدْفَعُهُ لَكَ عِنْدَمَا أَرْجِعُ.‘
36 “Now in your opinion, which one of these three men complied with the commandment to love the next person with regard to the [man] who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 The expert in religious law replied, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Then Isa said, “Go and do as he did.”
36 ”فَفِي رَأْيِكَ، أَيُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ الـ3 عَمِلَ بِوَصِيَّةِ مَحَبَّةِ الْآخَرِ مَعَ الَّذِي وَقَعَ فِي أَيْدِي اللُّصُوصِ؟“ 37 أَجَابَهُ عَالِمُ الشَّرِيعَةِ: ”الَّذِي عَامَلَهُ بِالرَّحْمَةِ.“ فَقَالَ عِيسَى: ”اِذْهَبْ وَاعْمَلْ مِثْلَهُ.“
Maryam and Martha
38 As Isa and his disciples were on their way, he arrived at a village.* And a lady named Martha hosted him in her home. 39 She had a sister named Maryam, who sat at the feet of Maulana Isa to listen to what he was saying. 40 As for Martha, she was busy with a lot of work. She came and said, “Master, doesn't it concern you that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her she should help me!” 41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are concerned and troubled over many things, 42 even though what is needed is [just] one thing. Maryam has chosen the best part, and it will not be taken away from her.”
مريم ومرثا
38 وَلَمَّا كَانَ عِيسَى وَتَلَامِيذُهُ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، وَصَلَ إِلَى قَرْيَةٍ.* فَأَضَافَتْهُ سَيِّدَةٌ اسْمُهَا مَرْثَا فِي دَارِهَا. 39 وَكَانَتْ لَهَا أُخْتٌ اسْمُهَا مَرْيَمُ جَلَسَتْ عِنْدَ قَدَمَيِ مَوْلانَا عِيسَى لِتَسْمَعَ كَلَامَهُ. 40 أَمَّا مَرْثَا فَكَانَتْ مُرْتَبِكَةً بِالشُّغْلِ الْكَثِيرِ. فَجَاءَتْ وَقَالَتْ: ”يَا سَيِّدِي، أَلَا يَهُمُّكَ أَنَّ أُخْتِي تَرَكَتْنِي أَشْتَغِلُ وَحْدِي؟ قُلْ لَهَا أَنْ تُسَاعِدَنِي!“ 41 أَجَابَهَا الْمَوْلَى: ”يَا مَرْثَا، يَا مَرْثَا، أَنْتِ مُهْتَمَّةٌ وَمُضْطَرِبَةٌ بِأُمُورٍ كَثِيرَةٍ، 42 مَعَ أَنَّ الْحَاجَةَ إِلَى أَمْرٍ وَاحِدٍ. مَرْيَمُ اخْتَارَتْ أَحْسَنَ نَصِيبٍ، وَلَنْ يُؤْخَذَ مِنْهَا.“

*10:4 food bag: At that time, travelers used a bag with one shoulder strap to carry food and personal items, such as an extra garment or pair of sandals.
*10:22 Father, Son: See footnote at Luke 2:49. In the Taurat, Psalms, and Prophets, Allah describes his relationship to his people in terms of a father who cares for his children (that is to say, like a parent or head of household who cares for his dependants). In this passage, Sayyiduna Isa describes his unique relationship with Allah as that of a mediator and intercessor who is close to Allah and has received authority from Allah to rule as king over humankind as Allah's vice-regent on earth. *10:22 الِابْنُ، الْأَبُ: انظر الحاشية في لوقا 2:49. في التوراة والمزامير والأنبياء، يصف الله علاقته بشعبه كعلاقة أب يهتم بأبنائه، أي أن الله هو وليّهم وربّهم الرحمن وأنهم عِياله. في هذا المقطع، يصف سيدنا عيسى علاقته الفريدة بالله بأنها علاقة وسيط وشفيع قريب من الله وبأنه قد حصل على السلطة من الله للحكم كملك على البشر (أي خليفة الله في الأرض). انظر العائلة في المسرد.
*10:27 This is quoted from Taurat, Leviticus 19:18. Most English versions say, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The Greek word translated as neighbor simply means “near,” so in this commandment it means “any other person with whom you come into contact.” This is expressed well in Arabic as الآخر al'ākhar and in English as the next person or as one another.
