In Iconium
1 The same thing happened when Paul and Barnabas went to Iconium* and entered the Jewish house of worship; they began speaking with such power that a large number of Jews and Gentiles* believed. 2 However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.* 3 Paul and Barnabas spent a long time there, speaking boldly about the blessings of the Messiah. And he himself confirmed their message by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.
4 The people of the city were divided. Some sided with the Jews, and others with the two apostles. 5 There was a conspiracy among the Gentiles and the Jews, along with their leaders, to attack the two men and stone them. 6 Paul and Barnabas sensed this, and they fled to two towns in Lycaonia* — Lystra and Derbe — and to the neighboring areas, 7 and there they proclaimed the good news as well.
In Lystra and Derbe
8 Sitting in Lystra was a man with crippled feet who had been lame from birth and had never walked. 9 He was listening to Paul as he spoke. Paul looked at him and saw that he had the faith to receive healing. 10 So he said to him in a loud voice, “Get up and stand on your legs!” Then the man jumped up and started walking.

11 When the people saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, saying, “The gods have taken the form of humans and have come among us!” 12 They thought that Barnabas was Zeus* and Paul was Hermes, since he was the main speaker. 13 Now close to the town was a temple to Zeus. So its priest brought bulls and wreaths of flowers to the town gate; he wanted, along with the crowd, to offer sacrifices to the two [men].
14 But when the two apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard this, they tore their clothes* and rushed to the crowd, 15 shouting, “People, why are you doing this? We are mere humans, just like you, and we are telling you the good news that you should turn away from these useless things to the living Allah, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. 16 In previous times, he permitted all the ethnic groups to do what they wanted, 17 yet he has always presented evidence that he exists. He does good; he gives you rain from the sky and crops in their time; he satisfies you with food and fills your hearts with joy.” 18 Despite saying this, only with difficulty were they able to prevent people from offering sacrifices to them.
19 But then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and persuaded the crowd; they stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, assuming that he had died. 20 However, the disciples gathered around him, and he got up and entered the town. Then the next day he traveled, along with Barnabas, to Derbe.
The Return to Antioch
21 The two apostles proclaimed the good news in Derbe, and many of the [people] became disciples of the Messiah. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to be firm in the faith, saying, “We have to suffer a lot before we enter the Kingdom of Allah.” 23 Paul and Barnabas chose elders* for every group [of believers]. After prayer and fasting, they entrusted them to the Messiah, in whom they had believed. 24 After traveling through Pisidia, they arrived in Pamphylia. 25 When they had proclaimed the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 Then they sailed from there to Antioch, the city from which the brothers had sent them, entrusted to Allah's care, to undertake the work they had [now] completed.*
27 When they arrived in Antioch, they gathered the believers together and reported everything our Lord had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the other ethnic groups. 28 And they spent a long time with the disciples.
