Cornelius
1 Now in the city of Caesarea,* there was an army officer named Cornelius, with the rank of captain of a hundred in a unit called the Italian Battalion. 2 He was devout and feared Allah — he and all his family. He gave much to the needy and always sought the face of Allah.
3 One day, at about three o'clock in the afternoon, he saw clearly in a vision an angel from Allah coming to him and saying, “Cornelius!” 4 [Cornelius] looked at him fearfully and said, “What is it, sir?” The angel said to him, “Your prayers and charity have gone up before Allah, and you are in his thoughts. 5 Now, send some men to Jaffa and summon Simon who is also called Peter.* 6 He can be found at Simon the tanner's, whose house is by the seashore.” 7 When the angel who spoke to him departed, [Cornelius] called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among his attendants. 8 He explained to them everything that had happened and sent them to Jaffa.*
9 The next day, as they were nearing the town, Peter went up to the housetop at noon to pray. 10 He became very hungry and wanted to eat. While they were preparing the food, a drowsiness came over him. 11 He saw the sky open and something descending, like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 In it were all sorts of animals: ones that walk, ones that crawl, and birds from the sky.* 13 A voice came to him, saying, “Get up, Peter; slaughter them and eat.” 14 Peter said, “No, sir! I have never eaten anything impure or defiled.” 15 But the voice said to him again, “[When] Allah has made something pure, don't consider it impure.” 16 This happened three times. Then the sheet was immediately lifted into the sky.
17 While Peter was thinking deeply about the meaning of the vision he had seen, the men sent by Cornelius asked about Simon's house and arrived at the gate. 18 They called out and asked, “Do you have a guest here named Simon Peter?” 19 Peter was still thinking about the meaning of the vision. Then the Spirit said to him, “There are three men looking for you. 20 Get up and go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation, for it is I who sent them.”
21 So Peter went down to the men and said, “I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?” 22 They answered, “We've come from Officer Cornelius. He is a good man who fears Allah, and all the Jewish people respect him. A holy angel appeared to him and told him to summon you to his house so that he can hear what you have to say.” 23 So Peter invited them [in], and he hosted them that night. The next day he went with them, and some of the brothers from Jaffa accompanied him as well.
24 The following day they arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, and he had invited his relatives and close friends. 25 When Peter arrived at the house, Cornelius went out to meet him, threw himself at his feet, and bowed down to him. 26 But Peter raised him up, saying to him, “Get up! I'm merely a man.” 27 He entered while talking with him and found a large number of people gathered. 28 He said to them, “You all know it's forbidden for a Jewish person to associate with non-Jewish people or to visit them. But Allah has shown me not to regard any person as unclean or impure. 29 And this is the reason why, when you sent for me, I came without objection. So, I ask you: Why did you send for me?”
30 Cornelius said, “Four days ago at three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house. Suddenly, a man in a dazzling garment appeared in front of me. 31 He told me, ‘Cornelius, Allah has heard your prayer and has noted your charitable gifts. 32 Now send to Jaffa and summon Simon Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, by the seashore.’ 33 So I sent for you at once, and it was kind of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of Allah to hear all that our Lord has instructed you to say.”
34 Then Peter began to address them, saying, “It has become clear to me that indeed Allah does not discriminate one person from another. 35 On the contrary, he accepts everyone who fears him and does good, no matter what his nationality is. 36 This is the message he sent to the Children of Israel, proclaiming to them the good news that peace* comes through Isa the Messiah, the Lord of all. 37 And you know what happened throughout the region of Judea, beginning in Galilee, after the [ritual] immersion that Yahya was calling [people] to, 38 how Allah anointed* Isa of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and he went everywhere doing good and healing all who were oppressed by Iblis, for Allah was with him. 39 We are witnesses of all that he did in the lands of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They crucified him and killed him, 40 but Allah raised him up alive on the third day and made him appear, 41 not to all people, but to the witnesses whom Allah had chosen earlier, namely to us who ate and drank with him after he rose from death. 42 Then he ordered us to announce to the people and testify that he is the one whom Allah has appointed to be the judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”
The Holy Spirit Comes upon Them
44 As Peter was saying this, the Holy Spirit came upon all who heard the message. 45 The Jewish believers who accompanied Peter were astounded that Allah had poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit on non-Jewish people as well, 46 for they heard them speaking in [different] languages and glorifying Allah. Then Peter said, 47 “These people have received the Holy Spirit just as we ourselves [did], so can anyone stop them from being immersed in water?” 48 And he ordered that they be immersed in the name of Isa the Messiah. Then they asked him to stay with them for several days.
