Bisharatu Yuhanna 4
Isa and a Samaritan Woman
1 The Pharisees heard that Isa was attracting more disciples than Yahya and was immersing them — 2 although Isa himself was not immersing [them], but his disciples were. 3 When he learned about this, he left the region of Judea and headed back to Galilee.
7 A Samaritan woman came to the well to get water. Isa said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 His disciples had gone to the town to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan, so how come you're asking me to give you a drink?” For Jews don't have dealings with Samaritans.* 10 Isa answered her, “If you had known the gift of Allah,* and who it is who's saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would give you living water.”
11 The woman said to him, “But, sir! You don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. From where would you get the living water? 12 Our forefather Yaqub gave us this well, and he drank from it — he and his children and his livestock. Are you greater than Yaqub?” 13 Isa answered her, “All who drink from this water will get thirsty again. 14 As for anyone who drinks the water that I give him, he will never be thirsty [again]. Rather, the water that I give him will become a fountain of water within him, flowing and giving eternal life.”*
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so I will not get thirsty and [have to] return here to get water.” He said to her, 16 “Go, call your husband and come [back].” 17 The woman answered, “I have no husband.” Isa said to her, “You were right when you said that you have no husband, 18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. You told the truth about that.”
19 The woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet! 20 Our forefathers worshiped Allah on this mountain,* but you Jews say that the place where we should worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 Isa said to her, “Believe me, woman, the time will come when you will worship the Father, but neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You [Samaritans] do not know the one you worship, but we know the one we worship, for the Savior* comes from among the Jews. 23 Nevertheless, the time is coming — in fact the time has come — when true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in the truth. The Father wants this kind of worshiper. 24 Allah is spirit, so those who worship him need to worship him in the Spirit and in the truth.”
25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah will come, and when he has come, he will explain everything to us.” 26 Isa answered her, “I am he — I who am speaking to you.”
27 At that [moment], the disciples arrived. They were surprised that he was speaking to a woman, yet no one asked him, “What do you want from her?” or “Why are you talking with her?” 28 The woman left her water jar and returned to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I have done! Do you think he could be the Messiah?” 30 They left the town and came to Isa.
31 During this time, the disciples were urging him saying, “Teacher, eat [something].” 32 He said to them, “I have food to eat that you don't know about.” 33 The disciples began asking one another, “Did someone bring him food?” 34 Isa said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.
35 You have a proverb that says, ‘After four months, the harvest will come,’ but I say to you, open your eyes and look at the fields: they have ripened, and the time has come to harvest them. 36 The harvester has begun to take his wages and gather the crop for eternal life, and so the planter and the harvester can rejoice together. 37 In this [case] the proverb comes true: ‘One plants, and another harvests.’ 38 I have sent you to harvest something for which you didn't labor. Others have labored, and you are benefiting from the fruit of their labor.”
39 Many of the Samaritans in that town believed in him, because the woman was bearing witness, saying, “He told me everything I have done.” 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them, so he stayed there two days. 41 A greater number of them believed in him when they heard him speak. 42 They said to the woman, “We believe, not because you told us, but because we have heard him for ourselves and have come to know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”
43 After the two days, he left there for Galilee. 44 He himself had mentioned that there is no honor for a prophet in his homeland. 45 When he reached Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had gone to Jerusalem for the festival and had seen everything that Isa did there during the festival.
He Heals the Son of the King's Servant
46 Then [Isa] visited Cana in Galilee again, where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a man, one of the king's officials, whose son was sick in Kafr Nahum. 47 When he heard that Isa had come from the region of Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to go with him and heal his son, who was on the verge of death. 48 Isa said to him, “You [people] will not believe unless you see miraculous signs and wonders.” 49 The man said to him, “Master, come before my son dies.” 50 Isa said to him, “Go, your son will live.” The man believed what Isa said and went.
51 While he was on the way, his servants met him and informed him that his son was alive. 52 He asked them, “At what time did his condition improve?” They answered him, “Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon, the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that this was the same time at which Isa had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he believed, he and all his family. 54 This then was the second miraculous sign that Isa did, and it occurred when he returned from the region of Judea to Galilee.

*4:9 Samaritans: a Hebrew tribe living between Judea and Galilee, most of whom claimed descent from the prophet Yusuf son of Yaqub. They believed in Allah and the Taurat, but they worshiped Allah on Mount Gerizim, in what is now the West Bank. As for the Jews, they claimed descent from Judah, son of the prophet Yaqub, and they worshiped Allah on Mount Moriah (the Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. The two tribes despised one another.
*4:22 the Savior: the One sent from Allah to bring salvation to people; also called the Messiah. The word used in the original languages can mean both salvation from Allah and the savior whom he sends. According to the Injil, the Messiah saves all who repent and accept him in faith by teaching them the truth, by showing them the way Allah wants them to live and pray, by bringing forgiveness of their sins, by giving them a spiritual rebirth through the Holy Spirit, by healing, protecting, and delivering them from evil, and by granting them a share in eternal life with Allah in the paradise of his Kingdom. See salvation in the glossary.
