The Issue of Saturday
1 One Saturday, Isa passed through some wheat fields, and his disciples began plucking off heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating [them].* 2 So some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing something that is not allowed to be done on Saturday?”* 3 Isa answered them, saying, “Have you not read what Dawud did when he was hungry — he and his companions? 4 He went into the Temple of Allah * and took and ate some of the bread of the sacred offering,* the eating of which was not lawful except for the priests alone. He also gave some of it to his companions.” 5 Then he said to them, “The One Who Became Man has authority over Saturday.”*

1 وَفِي أَحَدِ أَيَّامِ السَّبْتِ، مَرَّ عِيسَى وَسَطَ حُقُولِ الْقَمْحِ، فَأَخَذَ تَلَامِيذُهُ يَقْطِفُونَ السَّنَابِلَ، وَيَفْرُكُونَهَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ وَيَأْكُلُونَ.* 2 فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ: ”لِمَاذَا تَعْمَلُونَ مَا لَا يَحِلُّ عَمَلُهُ فِي يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ؟“* 3 فَأَجَابَهُمْ عِيسَى وَقَالَ: ”أَلَمْ تَقْرَأُوا مَا فَعَلَهُ دَاوُدُ لَمَّا جَاعَ هُوَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ؟ 4 إِنَّهُ دَخَلَ بَيْتَ اللهِ* وَأَخَذَ وَأَكَلَ مِنْ خُبْزِ الْقُرْبَانِ الْمُقَدَّسِ* الَّذِي لَا يَحِلُّ أَكْلُهُ إِلَّا لِلْأَحْبَارِ وَحْدَهُمْ، وَأَعْطَى مِنْهُ أَيْضًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ.“ 5 ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ: ”الَّذِي صَارَ بَشَرًا لَهُ السُّلْطَةُ عَلَى يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ.“*
He Heals on a Saturday
6 On another Saturday, he went to the house of worship and began to teach. There was a man there whose right hand was paralyzed. 7 The religious scholars and the Pharisees were trying to find grounds for an accusation against Isa, so they began watching him to see if he would heal on a Saturday. 8 However, he knew their thoughts. He said to the man whose hand was paralyzed, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So [the man] got up and stood in front of them. 9 Then Isa said to them, “I have a question for you: Is it lawful on a Saturday to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy it?” 10 He looked around at them all and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and his hand was completely healed. 11 [At this] they became very angry and conferred together [about] what they should do with Isa.

6 وَفِي سَبْتٍ آخَرَ ذَهَبَ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْعِبَادَةِ وَأَخَذَ يُعَلِّمُ. وَكَانَ هُنَاكَ رَجُلٌ يَدُهُ الْيُمْنَى مَشْلُولَةٌ. 7 وَكَانَ الْفُقَهَاءُ وَالْفَرِّيسِيُّونَ يُحَاوِلُونَ أَنْ يَجِدُوا شَكْوَى ضِدَّ عِيسَى، فَأَخَذُوا يُرَاقِبُونَهُ، لِيَرَوْا إِنْ كَانَ يَشْفِي فِي يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ. 8 لَكِنَّهُ عَرَفَ أَفْكَارَهُمْ، فَقَالَ لِلرَّجُلِ الَّذِي يَدُهُ مَشْلُولَةٌ: ”قُمْ وَقِفْ أَمَامَ الْجَمِيعِ.“ فَقَامَ وَوَقَفَ أَمَامَهُمْ. 9 فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عِيسَى: ”عِنْدِي سُؤَالٌ لَكُمْ، هَلْ يَحِلُّ فِي يَوْمِ السَّبْتِ عَمَلُ الْخَيْرِ أَمْ عَمَلُ الشَّرِّ؟ إِنْقَاذُ حَيَاةٍ أَمْ إِهْلَاكُهَا؟“ 10 وَتَلَفَّتَ فِيهِمْ جَمِيعًا وَقَالَ لِلرَّجُلِ: ”مُدَّ يَدَكَ.“ فَمَدَّهَا فَشُفِيَتْ يَدُهُ تَمَامًا. 11 فَغَضِبُوا جِدًّا، وَتَشَاوَرُوا مَعًا مَاذَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِعِيسَى.
He Chooses the Companions
12 One day, [Isa] went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer* to Allah. 13 When morning came he called his disciples, and he chose twelve of them, whom he called apostles.* They were 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother; Yaqub and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; Yaqub the son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of Yaqub, and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed him.

12 وَفِي يَوْمٍ مِنَ الْأَيَّامِ خَرَجَ إِلَى الْجَبَلِ لِيُصَلِّيَ، وَقَضَى اللَّيْلَ كُلَّهُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ* للهِ. 13 وَلَمَّا طَلَعَ الصُّبْحُ، نَادَى تَلَامِيذَهُ، وَاخْتَارَ مِنْهُمُ 12 وَدَعَاهُمُ الرُّسُلَ* وَهُمْ: 14 سَمْعَانُ الَّذِي سَمَّاهُ بُطْرُسَ وَأَنْدْرَاوِسُ أَخُوهُ، يَعْقُوبُ وَيُوحَنَّا، فِيلِيبُ وَبَرْتَلْمِي، 15 مَتَّى وَتُومَا، يَعْقُوبُ ابْنُ حَلْفِي وَسَمْعَانُ الَّذِي يُدْعَى الْغَيُورَ، 16 يَهُوذَا ابْنُ يَعْقُوبَ وَيَهُوذَا الْقَرْيُوتِيُّ الَّذِي خَانَهُ فِيمَا بَعْدُ.
Isa Teaches and Heals Many People
17 Then he came down with them and stood on a flat place, where there was a large gathering of his disciples, as well as a great gathering of people from all over the region of Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastland of Sur and Saida. 18 They had come to hear him and to receive healing from their diseases, and those who were tormented by evil spirits received healing. 19 The entire crowd kept trying to touch him, because power was going out from him and was healing them all.
عيسى يُعلم ويشفي كثيرين
17 ثُمَّ نَزَلَ مَعَهُمْ، وَوَقَفَ فِي مَكَانٍ مُنْبَسِطٍ. وَكَانَ هُنَاكَ جَمْعٌ غَفِيرٌ مِنْ تَلَامِيذِهِ، وَجَمْعٌ كَبِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ مِنْ كُلِّ مَنْطِقَةِ يَهُوذَا وَالْقُدْسِ وَسَاحِلِ صُورَ وَصَيْدَا، 18 جَاءُوا لِيَسْمَعُوهُ وَيَنَالُوا الشِّفَاءَ مِنْ أَمْرَاضِهِمْ. وَالَّذِينَ كَانُوا مُعَذَّبِينَ بِأَرْوَاحٍ شِرِّيرَةٍ نَالُوا الشِّفَاءَ. 19 وَكَانَ الْجُمْهُورُ كُلُّهُ يُحَاوِلُ أَنْ يَلْمِسَهُ، لِأَنَّ قُوَّةً كَانَتْ تَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ وَتَشْفِيهِمْ جَمِيعًا.
True Happiness
20 He looked at his disciples and said, “How fortunate for you who are poor, because you have a share in the Kingdom of Allah.* 21 How fortunate for you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. How fortunate for you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 How fortunate for you whenever people hate you, reject you, insult you, and revile your name as if it were evil, simply because you are followers of the One Who Became Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, because your reward in heaven is great, for their forefathers mistreated the prophets in the same way.
الهناء الحقيقي
20 وَنَظَرَ إِلَى تَلَامِيذِهِ وَقَالَ: ”هَنِيئًا لَكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمَسَاكِينُ، لِأَنَّ لَكُمْ نَصِيبًا فِي مَمْلَكَةِ اللهِ.* 21 هَنِيئًا لَكُمْ يَا مَنْ تَجُوعُونَ الْآنَ، لِأَنَّكُمْ سَتَشْبَعُونَ. هَنِيئًا لَكُمْ يَا مَنْ تَبْكُونَ الْآنَ، لِأَنَّكُمْ سَتَضْحَكُونَ. 22 هَنِيئًا لَكُمْ إِذَا كَرِهَكمُ النَّاسُ، وَإِذَا رَفَضُوكُمْ وَشَتَمُوكُمْ وَأَهَانُوا اسْمَكُمْ كَأَنَّهُ شِرِّيرٌ، لِمُجَرَّدِ أَنَّكُمْ أَتْبَاعُ الَّذِي صَارَ بَشَرًا. 23 اِفْرَحُوا فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَاقْفِزُوا مِنَ الْفَرَحِ لِأَنَّ أَجْرَكُمْ فِي السَّمَاءِ عَظِيمٌ. فَإِنَّ آبَاءَهُمْ عَامَلُوا الْأَنْبِيَاءَ بِنَفْسِ الطَّرِيقَةِ.
24 “But how terrible it will be for you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort here. 25 How terrible it will be for you who are satisfied now, for you will be hungry. How terrible it will be for you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. 26 How terrible it will be for you when all the people praise you, for their forefathers treated the false prophets* in the same way.
24 ”لَكِنْ يَا وَيْلَكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْأَغْنِيَاءُ، لِأَنَّكُمْ قَدْ نِلْتُمْ نَعِيمَكُمْ هُنَا. 25 يَا وَيْلَكُمْ يَا مَنْ تَشْبَعُونَ الْآنَ، لِأَنَّكُمْ سَتَجُوعُونَ. يَا وَيْلَكُمْ يَا مَنْ تَضْحَكُونَ الْآنَ، لِأَنَّكُمْ سَتَحْزَنُونَ وَتَبْكُونَ. 26 يَا وَيْلَكُمْ إِذَا مَدَحَكُمْ كُلُّ النَّاسِ، فَإِنَّ آبَاءَهُمْ عَامَلُوا الأَنْبِيَاءَ الْمُزَيَّفِينَ* بِنَفْسِ الطَّرِيقَةِ.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But to you who are listening I say, love* your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for the good of those who mistreat you. 29 Whoever slaps you on your cheek, offer him the other cheek. And whoever takes your coat, don't withhold from him your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks you; and whoever takes what is yours, do not demand it back from him. 31 Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.
أحبوا أعداءكم
27 ”وَلَكِنِّي أَقُولُ لَكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُسْتَمِعُونَ: أَحِبُّوا* أَعْدَاءَكُمْ، أَحْسِنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ يَكْرَهُونَكُمْ، 28 بَارِكُوا الَّذِينَ يَلْعَنُونَكُمْ، وَادْعُوا بِالْخَيْرِ لِلَّذِينَ يُسِيئُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ. 29 مَنْ ضَرَبَكَ عَلَى خَدِّكَ فَاعْرِضْ لَهُ الْخَدَّ الْآخَرَ. وَمَنْ أَخَذَ مِنْكَ رِدَاءَكَ فَلَا تَمْنَعْ عَنْهُ ثَوْبَكَ أَيْضًا. 30 أَعْطِ كُلَّ مَنْ يَسْأَلُكَ. وَمَنْ أَخَذَ مَا هُوَ لَكَ فَلَا تُطَالِبْهُ بِهِ. 31 عَامِلُوا النَّاسَ بِمِثْلِ مَا تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُعَامِلُوكُمْ.
32 If you love someone who loves you, is there any credit to you for that? Even evildoers love those who love them! 33 If you do good to someone who does good to you, is there any credit to you for that? Even evildoers do that! 34 And if you lend to someone who you know will repay you, is there any credit to you for that? Even evildoers lend to other evildoers and expect repayment in full. 35 But love your enemies and do good to them. Lend to them and don't expect repayment. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High,* for he is gracious even to ungrateful and evildoers. 36 Be compassionate, just as [Allah] your Father* is compassionate.
32 إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ مَنْ يُحِبُّكُمْ، فَهَلْ لَكُمْ فَضْلٌ فِي هَذَا؟ حَتَّى الْأَشْرَارُ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ يُحِبُّهُمْ. 33 وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحْسِنُونَ إِلَى مَنْ يُحْسِنُ إِلَيْكُمْ، فَهَلْ لَكُمْ فَضْلٌ فِي هَذَا؟ حَتَّى الْأَشْرَارُ يَفْعَلُونَ هَذَا. 34 وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُقْرِضُونَ مَنْ تَعْرِفُونَ أَنَّهُ سَيَقُومُ بِالسَّدَادِ، فَهَلْ لَكُمْ فَضْلٌ فِي هَذَا؟ حَتَّى الْأَشْرَارُ يُقْرِضُونَ الْأَشْرَارَ وَيَتَوَقَّعُونَ السَّدَادَ بِالْكَامِلِ. 35 وَلَكِنْ أَحِبُّوا أَعْدَاءَكُمْ، وَأَحْسِنُوا إِلَيْهِمْ، وَأَقْرِضُوهُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَقَّعُوا السَّدَادَ، فَيَكُونَ أَجْرُكُمْ عَظِيمًا وَتَكُونُوا أَبْنَاءَ الْعَلِيِّ،* فَهُوَ يُنْعِمُ حَتَّى عَلَى غَيْرِ الشَّاكِرِينَ وَالْأَشْرَارِ. 36 كُونُوا رُحَمَاءَ كَمَا أَنَّ أَبَاكُمْ* رَحِيمٌ.
Do Not Judge Anyone
37 “Do not judge anyone; then Allah will not judge you. Do not find fault with others; then Allah will not find fault with you. Forgive others, and Allah will forgive you. 38 Give, and Allah will give to you. Into your lap he will pour for you a full measure — pressed down, shaken [together], and flowing over. For the measure with which you measure out to others is the same one by which it will be measured out to you.”
لا تحكموا على أحد
37 ”لَا تَحْكُمُوا عَلَى أَحَدٍ، وَبِذَلِكَ لَا يَحْكُمُ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ. لَا تَعِيبُوا فِي أَحَدٍ، وَبِذَلِكَ لَا يَبْحَثُ اللهُ عَنِ الْعَيْبِ فِيكُمْ. سَامِحُوا الْآخَرِينَ، فَيَغْفِرَ اللهُ لَكُمْ. 38 أَعْطُوا يُعْطِيكُمُ اللهُ. فِي حِجْرِكُمْ يَصُبُّ لَكُمْ كَيْلًا مَلْآنًا وَمَكْبُوسًا وَمَهْزُوزًا وَفَائِضًا. لِأَنَّ الْكَيْلَ الَّذِي تَكِيلُونَ بِهِ لِلْآخَرِينَ، هُوَ نَفْسُهُ يُكَالُ بِهِ لَكُمْ.“
39 Then he told them this parable: “Is a blind person able to lead [another] blind person? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A student is not above his teacher. But everyone who completes his education will be like his teacher.
39 وَضَرَبَ لَهُمْ هَذَا الْمَثَلَ: ”هَلْ يَقْدِرُ أَعْمَى أَنْ يَقُودَ أَعْمَى؟ أَلَا يَسْقُطُ الْاِثْنَانِ فِي حُفْرَةٍ؟ 40 لَيْسَ التِّلْمِيذُ أَعْلَى مِنْ مُعَلِّمِهِ، بَلْ كُلُّ مَنْ أَكْمَلَ تَعْلِيمَهُ، يَكُونُ كَمُعَلِّمِهِ.
41 “Why do you look at the piece of straw in your brother's eye, yet do not notice the plank of wood that's in your [own] eye? 42 How can you say to your brother,* ‘Brother, let me remove the piece of straw from your eye,’ while you do not see the plank that's in your [own] eye? You hypocrite! Remove the plank from your eye first; then it will be possible for you to see in order to remove the piece of straw from your brother's eye.
41 ”لِمَاذَا تَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْقَشَّةِ الَّتِي فِي عَيْنِ أَخِيكَ، وَلَا تُلَاحِظُ لَوْحَ الْخَشَبِ الَّذِي فِي عَيْنِكَ؟ 42 بَلْ كَيْفَ تَقُولُ لِأَخِيكَ: * ’يَا أَخِي، خَلِّنِي أُخْرِجُ الْقَشَّةَ مِنْ عَيْنِكَ‘، بَيْنَمَا أَنْتَ لَا تَرَى اللَّوْحَ الَّذِي فِي عَيْنِكَ؟ يَا مُنَافِقُ، أَخْرِجِ اللَّوْحَ مِنْ عَيْنِكَ أَوَّلًا، فَيُمْكِنَكَ أَنْ تَرَى لِتُخْرِجَ الْقَشَّةَ مِنْ عَيْنِ أَخِيكَ.
We Can Know a Tree by Its Fruit
43 “It is not possible for a good tree to produce bad fruit, or for a bad tree to produce good fruit, 44 for each tree can be known by its fruit. We don't pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from brambles! 45 A good person presents goodness from the goodness stored in his heart, and a bad person presents evil from the evil stored in his heart, because the mouth speaks the things that fill the heart.

43 ”لَا يُمْكِنُ لِشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَنْ تُعْطِيَ ثَمَرًا رَدِيئًا، وَلَا لِشَجَرَةٍ رَدِيئَةٍ أَنْ تُعْطِيَ ثَمَرًا طَيِّبًا. 44 لِأَنَّ كُلَّ شَجَرَةٍ تُعْرَفُ مِنْ ثَمَرِهَا. فَنَحْنُ لَا نَجْنِي مِنَ الشَّوْكِ تِينًا وَلَا مِنَ الْعُلَّيْقِ* عِنَبًا! 45 الْإِنْسَانُ الصَّالِحُ يُقَدِّمُ صَلَاحًا مِنَ الصَّلَاحِ الْمَخْزُونِ فِي قَلْبِهِ، وَالْإِنْسَانُ الشِّرِّيرُ يُقَدِّمُ شَرًّا مِنَ الشَّرِّ الْمَخْزُونِ فِي قَلْبِهِ. لِأَنَّ الْفَمَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْأَشْيَاءِ الَّتِي تَمْلَأُ الْقَلْبَ.
Two Kinds of Foundation
46 “Why do you call me ‘Master! Master!’ and do not do what I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me and listens to what I say and does it, I can compare him for you 48 to a man building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on rock. Then when a flood occurred, the river surged against that house but was unable to shake it, because it was well built. 49 As for anyone who hears what I say but does not do it, he is like a man who built a house on the dirt without a foundation. Then the river surged against it, and it collapsed at once and was totally ruined.”

46 ”لِمَاذَا تَدْعُونِي: ’يَا سَيِّدُ! يَا سَيِّدُ!‘ وَلَا تَعْمَلُونَ بِمَا أَقُولُ؟ 47 كُلُّ مَنْ يَأْتِي إِلَيَّ وَيَسْمَعُ كَلَامِي وَيَعْمَلُ بِهِ، أُشَبِّهُهُ لَكُمْ 48 بِرَجُلٍ يَبْنِي دَارًا، فَحَفَرَ عَمِيقًا، وَوَضَعَ الْأَسَاسَ عَلَى الصَّخْرِ. فَلَمَّا حَدَثَ فَيَضَانٌ، اِنْدَفَعَ النَّهْرُ عَلَى تِلْكَ الدَّارِ، لَكِنَّهُ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ أَنْ يَزِيحَهَا لِأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ مَبْنِيَّةً جَيِّدًا. 49 أَمَّا مَنْ يَسْمَعُ كَلَامِي وَلَا يَعْمَلُ بِهِ، فَيُشْبِهُ رَجُلًا بَنَى دَارًا عَلَى التُّرَابِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَسَاسٍ، فَانْدَفَعَ النَّهْرُ عَلَيْهَا، فَانْهَارَتْ فِي الْحَالِ وَتَحَطَّمَتْ تَمَامًا.“
*6:2 In the Taurat at Deuteronomy 5:14, it says, “As for the seventh day, it is a rest from the Lord your Allah; do not do any work on that day.” The Pharisees did not fault the disciples of Isa for plucking heads of grain that belonged to someone else but for doing this on a Saturday, their day of rest.
*6:4 the Temple of Allah: the holy place where Allah was present in a special way and where priests presented offerings of bread and incense in his honor. See Temple interior in the glossary. No one was allowed to enter the Temple of Allah or eat the bread except for priests. At the time of the prophet Dawud, the temple was actually a large tent, often called a tabernacle in English.
*6:4 بَيْتَ اللهِ: المكان المقدس الذي كان الله حاضرًا فيه بطريقة خاصّة ويقدّم فيه الأحبار تضحيات من خبز وبخور إكرامًا لله. انظر داخل بيت الله في مسرد المصطلحات. ولم يكن يُسمَح لأحد بدخول بيت الله ما خلا الأحبار. في زمن النبي داود، كان بيت الله في الحقيقة عبارة عن خيمة كبيرة، وغالبًا ما كان يُطلَق عليه اسم «خيمة الاجتماع».
*6:4 the bread of the sacred offering: twelve loaves of bread which priests placed on a gold table in the Temple of Allah every Saturday as an offering of thanks to Allah. At the end of the week the priests would replace the loaves with fresh ones and would eat the week-old loaves. See Taurat, Leviticus 24:5-9.
*6:5 authority over Saturday: authority to declare what people are allowed to do on Saturday. In this case, Isa allowed his disciples to pluck and thresh grain on a Saturday, even though this was a form of work.
*6:12 prayer: talking to Allah. The English word prayer can be used for worship prayers, supplications, and devotional prayer. Isa may have done all three during the night.
*6:13 apostles: people whom Allah has chosen, empowered, and sent off to spread his message and to advance his Kingdom on the earth. The apostles whom Isa chose are also known in Arabic as الحَواريِّونَ ḥawāriyyyūn.
*6:20 a share in the Kingdom of Allah: a promise from Allah that they belong to his Kingdom and will enter Paradise. Isa is telling his disciples that although they may be poor, hungry, weeping, or persecuted, they are richly blessed, because Allah has accepted them into his eternal Kingdom and they will live forever with him in Paradise, where there is no hunger or weeping or enmity. *6:20 نَصِيبًا فِي مَمْلَكَةِ اللهِ: وعد من الله بأنَّهم سينتمون إلى مملكته ويدخلون الجنة. يُخبِر عيسى تلاميذه بأَنَّه رغم كونهم فقراء أو جوعى أو باكين أو مُضطهَدين، فإنّهم يتمتّعون ببركة وفيرة، لأنَّ الله قد قبلهم في مملكته الأبديّة وسيحيون معه إلى الأبد في الجنّة، حيث لا جوع ولا بكاء ولا عداوة. انظر مملكة الله في مسرد المصطلحات.
*6:26 false prophets: Or fake prophets. These are people who falsely claim to be prophets of Allah.
*6:27 love: The English word love has a wide range of meanings, but in the Scriptures it usually means to value others and actively promote their well-being.
*6:35 sons of the Most High: godly people, أولياء الله, for whom Allah has a fatherly love because they love him and others. Note that in English one can describe someone as “a man of strength” (meaning a strong man) or “a man of evil” (meaning an evil man) or “a man of Allah” (meaning a godly man), but in the languages that Sayyiduna Isa spoke, one would say “a son of strength” or “a son of evil” or “a son of Allah.” So when reading translations of the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures, one needs to understand the words son and ابن according to their usage in those languages, not according to their usage in one's own language. *6:35 أَبْنَاءَ الْعَلِيِّ: العليّ هو الله عزّ وجلّ، وَوَصْفُهُم بأبنائه يعني أنّهم أشخاص أتقياء، يكنّ لهم الله محبّة أبويّة لأنَّهم يحبّونه ويحبّون إخوانهم من البشر. لاحظ أننا نقول في العربيّة: ابن السبيل (بمعنى المسافر) وابن البلد (بمعنى المواطن) وبنت شفه (بمعنى الكلمة) دون أنْ نقصد المعنى الحرفي لكلمة ابن أو بنت. ولكن في اللغات التي تكلّم بها سيدنا عيسى كانوا يقولون: «ابن القوة» أو «ابن الشر» أو «ابن الله» بمعنى «إنسان قويّ» أو «رجل شرير» أو «رجل تقي». لذلك فعند قراءة ترجمة للكتاب المُقدَّس من العبريّة واليونانيّة، ينبغي للقارئ أنْ يفهم كلمة «ابن» وفقًا لاستخدامها في تلك اللغات، وليس وفقًا لاستخدامها في لغته الخاصّة. بالنسبة إلى استخدام الألفاظ الدالة على العائلة في الإنجيل، انظر العائلة في مسرد المصطلحات.
*6:36 أَبَاكُمْ: أي ربّكم الرؤوف الذي يعتني بكم. انظر مزمور 103:13: ”كَمَا يَعْطِفُ الْأَبُ عَلَى أَوْلَادِهِ، يَعْطِفُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ يَتَّقُونَهُ“. فقد كان المؤمنون الذين يتّقون الله يبجّلونه وينادونه: «يا أبانا»، وهذا يعني «يا ربَنا الرحمن». انظر العائلة في مسرد المصطلحات.
